Reflections & Beliefs
An Act Of Terror
On September 11, 1 year into a new millennium, terrorists hijacked 4 commercial airlines and turned 3 of them into flying bombs killing over 2,000 human beings in the process. I don't know what motivated them, but in that single act of destruction the world was irrevocably altered.
The horrors of terrorism are well known to many of the peoples of the world and now the citizens of The United States are all too aware of their vulnerability. This has precipitated a demand for retaliation, for revenge, for a war on terrorism. The world has changed and none of us knows the shape of the future.
At times like these I am given to reflection and careful examination of my core beliefs. I recommend the practice to all of you who wish to walk in truth and know your innermost selves.
MY BELIEFS
I believe that God, the Creator, the Ultimate Reality or what ever name one prefers, is closer to me than my life vein and also transcends all thoughts, beliefs, concepts and feelings no matter how enlightened or knowledgeable a person may be.
I believe human beings are unique individuals, members of the human family and are at the bottom of the arc of ascent and the top of the arc of descent. By the latter, I believe all of us incorporate into our being all of the elements of nature, evolutionary processes while being drawn toward the transcendent, the virtuous, and the spiritual. This is why some of our actions reflect a purely selfish, mindless quality while others reflect love, compassion and generosity.
I believe evil is the consequence of a lack of the higher, spiritual attributes characteristic of the arc of ascent and not a thing in itself. Just like lack of vitamin C results in scurvy or lack of education results in ignorance, lack of a collective response to the spiritual summons of a higher reality results in an irreligious, and corrupt social order.
I believe to the degree any society or culture embraces greed, gluttony, selfishness, exclusivity and solipsism that culture or society becomes functionally atheistic and incapable of nurturing a truely spiritual covilization.
I believe any human being is deserving of respect, acceptance, affection and support and with out a genuinely nurturing social order, that human being will fail to achieve his or her highest potential.
I believe in multidimensional causality, in purpose, meaning and truth. I also believe all of us have the freedom of will to chose that which is good and the obligation to search for truth.
I believe our hearts and souls are purged through sorrow and grief to make room for compassion, empathy and the will to make things better for ourselves and our fellows.
I do not believe pain and suffering are solely the consequence of past misdeeds or errors.
I believe in the efficacy of prayer, of meditation and beauty to relieve the burdened heart and uplift our spirits.
I am grieving for the victims of tragedy and hope our race, the human family will mature and transcend the anger, the prejudice, the ignorance and the heartlessness which underwrites such hideous acts as was precipitated in New York and Washington on September 11.
